usb digital microscope

Warning, this is not a good gift for someone with OCD tendencies. It will suck up more time than one can possibly imagine. It will be one of the coolest thing you own. It will also be one of the scariest things you own. Because like me, you will discover that we are all surrounded by microscopic aliens from out of space. Yeap.

One of my favorite discoveries last year, this microscope plugs directly to the computer and displays the full color miscrocopic  images on the computer monitor. With zero experience, I was able to look at 200x microscopic views of all sorts of things (name it, I looked at it). This is when I discovered microscopic aliens. Alright, objects at 200x pretty much look like they’re from another planet. For the images that really freaked me, I was able to save them in JPEG format for storing and sharing. My very patient friends and family really love this function (uh, I think they are secretly strategizing how to steal this from my posession).

This QX5 Digital Microscope ($150) makes an amazing gift for any curious kid or adult. It zooms 10x, 60x and 200x. It can record video and be removed from its stand for hand-held use. The set-up is super easy – download the disc and plug it into a USB port.

Very cool, indeed! When my son gets a bit older (and can take better care of his things) I will definitely consider this as a Christmas gift. For my part, though, I have no desire to see all the creepy crawlies in my home.

Speaking of microscopic aliens…

Giant microbe stuffed toys for nonmicrophobics. Ranging from common illnesses to household parasites to life-threatening diseases, these plush toys are a fun way to introduce and educate children about hygiene and health issues. Or… Buy them as gag gifts – you may get a chuckle out of a hypochondriac (after they recover from fainting, that is). $7-$9 at Amazon.

Shown above: Scabies, Bed Bug, Lice, Dust Mite.

 ipod_gel_skins_covers_decals_green.jpg

If you desire style in everyday living, Gel Skins make a great solution for personalizing the look to your ipod, without the extra bulk of sleeves or covers. It is essentially a sticker that uses non-permanent adhesive, so you can change your style as often as you would like without damaging your ipod. Available for multiple ipod generations, $20-$30.

what a cool idea.

powersquid

 power_squid_strip.jpg

This great under $15 gift will be welcomed by anyone who owns more than one electronic item (that would be almost everybody, I would think). Some brilliant person probably invented this PowerSquid after struggling with trying to squeeze in those darn power converters onto their power strip. (Sound familiar?) For $13.55, this makes a great gift exchange item.

Derived from a 2003 NASA experiment, this fascinating gel serves both as habitat and nutrition for your pet ants (ships directly to your home). The aquarium is 100% self-sustaining, so no worries about feeding or cleaning. The Ant Habitat Kit includes magnifying glass and extreme zoom lens for close-up viewing. $29.99

extendable magnetic rescue wand with led

How many times have you vacuumed under the cabinet and heard "swoosh-kachunk-ki-ki-ki-ki" somewhere inside the vacuum? Every day is my answer. Because I’m forever dropping coins or screws or tacks behind my furniture and then forgetting about them, until my vacuum eats a few. The ugly task of giving the vacuum surgery should be reduced in frequency with this handy little tool – it’s a collapsible stick with a magnetic tip and LED light that automatically turns on when the stick is extended. My vacuum thanks the inventor of this little gadget. Available at ThinkGeek for $4.99 (good stocking stuffer).

Unfortunately, these fabulous Pantone mugs are only available in the U.K. right now. I don’t think you have to be a designer to appreciate the clever concept. Approximately $15 each.

retro wind-up ping pong toy

More collectible than toy, really, these wind-up tin toys continue to grow in popularity. With the overwhelming style options available, I recommend buying the ones that tell a personal story shared by you and your gift recipient.

I bought this Wind-Up Tin Ping Pong Toy ($24.99) for my Dad last holiday, because he was the one who taught me how to play when I was young. I was also privately reminding him about the awesome little fact that he was once a national champion player. Available at Mudan Boutique.

walk the talk – hemp converse slip-ons

 converse_shoes_hemp_eco-friendly_2.jpg

I am surprised each and every time I am asked, "Did you lose your shoe laces?" Hmmm. I guess it’s not that obvious they’re sewn down to wear as slip-ons. These Converse Chuck Taylor All Star Slips are on my favorites list because they are the perfect casual street shoes – they don’t discriminate age, sex or hipster/non-hipster. Very few street fashion items can do this.  Amazingly, the environmentally conscious hemp actually looks good on this design. Again, very few things can achieve this.

Good news and bad news. The good news is they’re on sale for $39.99 (good deal!). The bad news? They’re discontinued and are available in three sizes only (Men’s 4.5-6.5 or Women’s 6.5-8.5). Sorry.

There are so many great uses for these antique typewriter alphabet stamps, like creating personalized greeting cards, labeling storage boxes, or decorating your wall with poetic words. For $5.99 this makes an exceptional stocking stuffer.
